JAMES CAMERON'S ORIGINAL TERMINATOR 2 COMMENTARY COMES TO THEATERS FOR THE FIRST TIME

TheaterEars will deliver the Oscar-winning director's track — recorded with co-writer William Wisher and until now available only on home video — during the film's 35th Anniversary U.S. re-release, in theaters today through September 2

BURBANK, Calif. — August 28, 2026 — TheaterEars, the theatrical audio synchronization platform with approximately 4 million registered users, today announced that James Cameron's original feature commentary for Terminator 2: Judgment Day will be available in cinemas through its Director's Experience (DX) program, which delivers synchronized in-theater commentary to a moviegoer's own phone. The track will be offered throughout the film's 35th Anniversary re-release from STUDIOCANAL, Fathom Entertainment and Rialto Pictures, in U.S. theaters today through September 2.

Recorded by Cameron with co-writer William Wisher, the commentary has been a fixture of the film's DVD and Blu-ray editions for more than two decades. It has never been presented theatrically.

Across the track, Cameron walks through the effects work that made Terminator 2 a turning point — the liquid-metal T-1000 rising from a linoleum floor, stepping through steel bars, reforming after a shotgun blast. It was where he bet a blockbuster on techniques that had barely been proven, and won. The shots he created — digital scanning of actors, morphing between forms, computer-generated surfaces that reflect the world around them — became the technical foundation for everything that has followed, and set the stage for his own later work. With each film that followed, Cameron pushed the technology further: resurrecting the RMS Titanic in the film that won him Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Film Editing, and creating a photorealistic alien world in the Avatar films, which have grossed $6.8 billion worldwide. Each time, he reset the bar for excellence and innovation. Thirty-five years later, he is still the one raising it. The commentary is where he explains how it was done.

The Director's Experience is a complementary track that runs alongside the feature, not a separate version of it. Moviegoers access it by opening the TheaterEars app and selecting Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The commentary locks to the film playing on screen and stays frame-accurate through the end credits.

"Audiences proved this summer that if you give them a reason, they will get off the couch and go to the cinema," said Dan Mangru, CEO of TheaterEars. "The Director's Experience is that reason. You aren't just watching Terminator 2 — you have James Cameron and Bill Wisher in your ear, calling out the problems they solved, the shots nobody notices and the jokes buried in the frame. For a real movie lover, that is about as good as it gets. We're grateful to STUDIOCANAL and its U.S. home entertainment partner Lionsgate, and to our theatrical distribution partners Fathom and Rialto, for helping us bring it to the big screen."

The Director's Experience launched in 2026 with newly recorded, first-ever synchronized theatrical commentaries for Project Hail Mary (Phil Lord and Christopher Miller), followed over the summer by The Mandalorian and Grogu (Jon Favreau) and Toy Story 5 (co-director Kenna Harris) — original science fiction, a franchise tentpole and an animated sequel inside a single season. Terminator 2: Judgment Day opens a new strand of the program that brings existing archival commentary tracks to theatrical audiences, a format TheaterEars intends to extend across catalog and anniversary titles.

The underlying synchronization technology is already doing broader work in cinemas. The same system carries TheaterEars' Spanish-language dubbing and audio description tracks, which have run in theaters across North America for years and require nothing of exhibitors beyond a normal showtime. A director's commentary is a new use of infrastructure the platform has been operating at scale — and, TheaterEars says, one of many the format can support.

HOW IT WORKS: Audiences download the free TheaterEars app for iOS or Android, select Terminator 2: Judgment Day at a participating showtime, and put on their own headphones before the feature begins. The app uses TheaterEars' patented audio synchronization technology to align the commentary to the film in real time. Nothing plays out loud in the auditorium, so a DX listener can sit next to someone watching the film normally without affecting their experience. There is no hardware for theaters to install and no ticket upcharge.
