Wet Hot American Summer Marks 25th Anniversary with Release of Original Cast & Filmmaker Commentary in Movie Theaters Nationwide via the TheaterEars App
Recorded in 2001 by writer/director David Wain, co-writer Michael Showalter and star Janeane Garofalo, the track has lived on DVD and Blu-ray for nearly 25 years. It has never played in a theater. Starting August 14, it will.
Universal City, CA - August 14, 2026 — TheaterEars, the theatrical audio synchronization platform with approximately 4 million registered users, today announced that the original Wet Hot American Summer feature commentary will be available through its Director's Experience (DX) series — synchronized in-theater commentary delivered to a moviegoer's own phone — during Focus Features' 25th Anniversary theatrical re-release, in theaters nationwide August 14 through August 21.
The commentary — recorded in 2001 with writer/director David Wain, co-writer and star Michael Showalter, and star Janeane Garofalo — has been a fixture of the film's home entertainment releases since the 2002 DVD and the 2015 Blu-ray. It has never been presented theatrically.
TheaterEars' Director's Experience makes it possible for the first time: moviegoers open the TheaterEars app, select Wet Hot American Summer, and the commentary locks to the film playing on screen and stays locked, frame-accurate, through the end credits.
“We’re thrilled that audiences can now go behind the scenes of this all-time cult classic on the big screen via the app. This summer is proof positive that audiences want to get off the couch and into the movie theater. With the Director’s Experience we are able to create a premium audio experience in-app without an additional ticket upcharge. As new audiences discover beloved classics, we see this as growing market,” said Dan Mangru, CEO of TheaterEars.
The Director's Experience launched in 2026 with newly recorded, first-ever synchronized theatrical commentaries for Project Hail Mary (Phil Lord and Christopher Miller), followed by summer blockbusters The Mandalorian & Grogu (Jon Favreau), and Toy Story 5 (co-Director, Kenna Harris). Wet Hot American Summer marks the first time the program has brought an existing archival commentary to theatrical audiences — a format TheaterEars intends to extend to catalog and anniversary titles.
How it works
Audiences download the free TheaterEars app for iOS or Android, choose Wet Hot American Summer at any showtime during the run, before the feature begins, and put on their own headphones. The app uses TheaterEars' patented audio synchronization technology to align the commentary to the film in real time. Since headphones are required for use, nothing plays out loud in the auditorium, allowing a DX listener to sit next to someone watching the film normally without affecting their experience.
